Another iteration of the WMD-CD-21765 International Radiological Assistance Program Training for Emergency Response (I-RAPTER) Basic Course was organized by the Joint CBRN Defence Centre of Excellence and US Department of Energy National (DOE) Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).  The course was held from 9 until 12 May 2017.

The aim of the course was to provide practical information to effectively respond to radiological incidents and accidents. The course provided instruction through briefings, equipment demonstrations and field exercises employing a wide variety of radiation detection instruments, radiation sources, and personal protective equipment.
The performance of NNSA instructors (Mr. Andrae BROOKS, Mr. Charles GUINN, Mr. Bert COCHRAN, Mr. Kevin HUNGATE, Mr. Kevin ROLFE and Mrs. Rica SALCEDO) was very professional and highly appreciated by all students. They shared their experience with students, conducted well prepared activities and were engaged in interesting discussions.
The course participants (25 students from HUN, ITA, LUX, POL, SVN, ARE, EGT and QAT, members of armed forces, police, fire brigade units and civilian specialists) enjoyed a mix of theoretical lessons, practical activities and exercises.

During the field exercise training day (Day 3) the students conducted

  • Radiological search operation in a building (in cooperation with Radiological Laboratory, CBRN Defence Institute, CZE University of Defence);
  • Radiological mobile search operation in the garrison and surroundings (in cooperation with Vyskov Air Museum);
  • Radiological recovery operation.

The premises of Radiological Laboratory and Vyskov Air Museum created inspiring background for training of the detection and identification procedures and the safe transport of discovered radioactive sources to secure environment.
The course was evaluated by the students as very useful with great added value for their carrier’s development.
Next iteration is planned for May 2018. Moreover, the I-RAPTER Advanced (WMD-CD-31766) is planned for 6-9 November 2017. Beside the two I-RAPTER courses there are two more offered by NNSA and JCBRND COE:

  • WMD-CD-31768 International Radiological Consequence Management Training Course and
  • WMD-MD-21767 International Medical Management of Radiation Injuries (I-MED) Course.
