Pict1.png The Italian University of Rome “Tor Vergata” conducted its 4th International CBRNe Workshop focused on “Countering Radiological and Nuclear Threats”. The workshop took place at the Istituto Superiore Anticendi (National Fire Academy) in Rome on 8th November 2018. Just a preliminary remark: The “e” in “CBRNe” abbreviates “explosives” (Improvised Explosive Devices). However, “CBRNe” is not a NATO recognized abbreviation. Objectives of the workshop were to give a detailed overview of the current CBRNe risk scenarios whilst centering on radiological and nuclear scenarios.

The organisers combined a plenary session with an industrial exhibition. All enabling components of radiological and nuclear defence were covered. With 24 international speakers, more than 40 posters and five companies in the industrial exhibition it has been a unique experience to share knowledge about policy matters, technological aspects, emergency management experiences. About 250 participants, Italian military and civilian, academics and industries attended the workshop.

Presentations and posters covered a broad spectrum. Professor Alexander GLASER, Princeton University/USA, briefed e.g. on verified denuclearization of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), whilst others presented innovative technologies to detect and identify, but also to disable nuclear weapons and radiological devices. LtCol Bernd ALLERT, JCBRN DEFENCE COE, provided a briefing on “WMD disablement”.

Why did the JCBRN Defence COE contributed to the workshop? JCBRN Defence COE and the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in order to “make provisions for establishment of the collaborative environment between the JCBRN Defence COE and the University of Rome”. In addition, LtCol (DEU AR) B. Allert has been a member of the International CBRNe Master Courses’ didactic board since 2011.
